The celebration of Betico Day is approaching. January 25 marks the birth date of Liberator Gilberto “Betico” Croes, a national day on which the people of Aruba honor and remember his historical legacy. As every year, the National Library is organizing a special activity, and this year is no exception.

The National Library will celebrate Betico Day on January 22 with a broad cultural program dedicated to the life and work of Betico Croes. The celebration will honor the Liberator through various cultural and artistic activities.

Glenda Zavala, coordinator of the event, informed that one of the central moments of the evening will be the participation of Guisette Croes, daughter of Betico Croes, who will share a personal account of her father’s biography and legacy.

The program will also include poetry recitals by several Poets of the Nation, including Rutty Vrieswijk, Ariana Chirino, Avi Goeloe, and Berta Wolf, who will contribute to the solemn and cultural atmosphere of the evening.

To close the celebration, the audience will enjoy a musical performance by Grupo Betico, a group founded many years ago by Betico Croes himself. Generations of brothers, cousins, and nephews have continued the group over the years, keeping its musical spirit and cultural legacy alive.

The event will take place on January 22, starting at 7:00 p.m., at the National Library. The National Library invites the entire community of Aruba to participate in this special celebration and to honor a legacy that, “we must never forget.”

Tijdens een persconferentie ging parlementariër Eduard Pieters nader in op het derde agendapunt, namelijk de Rijkswet HOFA. Volgens de PPA vormt deze wet een ernstige bedreiging voor de Status Aparte van Aruba. Tijdens zijn recente bezoek aan Nederland sprak Pieters met verschillende leden van de Tweede Kamer, en vrijwel allen erkenden dat de Rijkswet HOFA zeer controversieel is—vooral omdat deze geen steun geniet van de Arubaanse bevolking en evenmin van een brede meerderheid in het Parlement van Aruba.

Het feit dat een wet met zulke ingrijpende gevolgen voor de fiscale en politieke soevereiniteit van Aruba wordt doorgedrukt zonder een lokaal democratisch mandaat, is een alarmerend signaal voor de Arubaanse democratie.

Sinds Begin 2025 Waarschuwt de PPA het Volk en Maatschappelijke Organisaties

Sinds begin 2025 is de PPA-fractie gestart met een reeks bijeenkomsten met ondernemersorganisaties, vakbonden en maatschappelijke organisaties om uit te leggen wat de Rijkswet HOFA werkelijk inhoudt en welk reëel gevaar deze vormt voor Aruba. De PPA heeft een minderheidsnota opgesteld en verspreid, met juridische, economische en constitutionele argumenten die duidelijk maken waarom deze wet niet in het belang is van de Status Aparte—juist nu Aruba 40 jaar autonomie viert.

De boodschap was duidelijk: HOFA is een stap terug in de strijd voor zelfbeschikking.

Zonder de Volharding van de PPA Zou HOFA Al Lang Realiteit Zijn

“Tijdens een recent overleg met de Raad van State werd duidelijk dat de Rijkswet HOFA niet eens op hun radar stond. Nederland wil dat de nieuwe regering deze situatie bilateraal tussen Nederland en Aruba behandelt. Als het niet was geweest voor de voortdurende inzet van de PPA en de oppositie, zou de wet al lang zonder serieus debat zijn aangenomen en in strijd met elke poging om draagvlak te creëren bij het volk en het parlement.

Dit toont aan dat Aruba in een gevaarlijke comfortzone is beland. Status Aparte bestaat nu 40 jaar, maar de waarde van autonomie vervaagt in de mentaliteit van de regering.”

De PPA prijst het initiatief van oud-minister-president Nelson Oduber en zijn documentaire over de ware betekenis van Status Aparte, als middel om de jongere generatie te onderwijzen en eraan te herinneren dat autonomie niet vanzelfsprekend is—zij moet worden verdedigd.

De Strijd van de PPA: “Baas in Eigen Huis”

HOFA en het Verhaal van het “Overschot”

“Minister Geoffrey Wever presenteerde de Rijkswet HOFA aan parlementariërs van de andere eilanden, maar zelfs zij stelden Aruba’s positie ter discussie: Hoe kun je HOFA accepteren als je een begrotingsoverschot hebt? De waarheid is dat Aruba voldoet aan de LAFT-normen. Er is geen noodzaak om toe te treden tot een RAFT om geld te lenen. Zodra Aruba toetreedt tot de RAFT, komt het daar nooit meer uit en verliest het de zelfbeschikking waarvoor zo hard is gevochten.

Precies daarom heeft de PPA-fractie tegen de begroting van Aruba gestemd. De regering schept op over een overschot, maar wil toch blijven lenen, zonder een concrete investeringslijst—inhoudsloos en zonder transparantie. Dit hebben we al eerder gezien bij Plan Bo Bario, waar enorme bedragen zonder voldoende controle werden uitgegeven,” benadrukte Pieters.

Onze Autonomie Staat Niet te Koop

Tot slot benadrukte Eduard Pieters dat de Rijkswet HOFA indruist tegen alle principes van zelfbeschikking. Aruba is geen financiële afdeling van het Koninkrijk. Aruba is een land met 40 jaar Status Aparte. De PPA zal de autonomie en zelfbeschikking van Aruba blijven verdedigen.

During a press conference, Parliamentarian Eduard Pieters elaborated on the third item on the agenda, namely the HOFA Kingdom Act (Rijkswet HOFA). According to the PPA, this law represents a serious threat to Aruba’s Status Aparte. During his recent visit to the Netherlands, Pieters spoke with various members of the Dutch House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer), and virtually all acknowledged that the HOFA Kingdom Act is highly controversial especially because it lacks support from both the Aruban population and a broad majority in the Parliament of Aruba.

The fact that a law with such far-reaching consequences for Aruba’s fiscal and political sovereignty is being pushed forward without a local democratic mandate is an alarming signal for Aruba’s democracy.

Since the Beginning of 2025, PPA Has Been Warning the Public and Social Organizations

Since early 2025, the PPA parliamentary faction has held a series of meetings with business associations, labor unions, and social organizations to explain what the HOFA Kingdom Act truly entails and the real dangers it poses for Aruba. The PPA prepared and distributed a minority report containing legal, economic, and constitutional arguments, clearly explaining why this law does not benefit Aruba’s Status Aparte especially at a time when Aruba is celebrating 40 years of autonomy.

The message was clear: HOFA represents a step backward in Aruba’s struggle for self-determination.

Without PPA’s Persistence, HOFA Would Have Become Reality Long Ago

“During a recent meeting with the Council of State, it became clear that the HOFA Kingdom Act was not even on their radar. The Netherlands wants the new government to address this situation bilaterally between the Netherlands and Aruba. If it were not for the continued insistence of the PPA and the opposition, the law would have passed long ago without serious debate and against all principles of goodwill aimed at securing support from both the people and Parliament.

This shows that Aruba has entered a dangerously comfortable zone. Status Aparte is now 40 years old, but the value of autonomy is fading from the government’s mindset.”

The PPA applauds the initiative of former Prime Minister Nelson Oduber and his documentary explaining what Status Aparte truly means, as a way to educate the younger generation and remind them that autonomy is not automatic it must be defended.

PPA’s Struggle: “Being the Boss in Our Own House”

HOFA and the “Surplus” Narrative

“Minister Geoffrey Wever presented the HOFA Kingdom Act to parliamentarians from the other islands, but even those parliamentarians questioned Aruba’s position: How can you accept HOFA when you have a budget surplus? The truth is that Aruba meets the LAFT standards. There is no need to enter a RAFT in order to borrow funds. Once Aruba enters the RAFT, it will never exit, and we will lose the self-determination for which we fought so hard.

That is precisely why the PPA faction voted against Aruba’s national budget. The government boasts about having a surplus, yet still wants to borrow money, and on top of that, there is no concrete investment list—only empty content. There is no plan and even less transparency. We have seen this before with the Plan Bo Bario, where large sums of money were spent without proper oversight,” Pieters emphasized.

Our Autonomy Is Not for Sale

In closing, Eduard Pieters stressed that the HOFA Kingdom Act goes against all principles of self-determination. Aruba is not a financial department of the Kingdom. Aruba is a country with 40 years of Status Aparte. The PPA will continue to defend Aruba’s autonomy and right to self-determination.
