Recently, I spoke with Mrs. Sue-Ann Ras to learn more about the impressive campaign by Fundacion Zinnia: Supla pa Bida, a project in which they provide a breathalyzer test kit so you can blow into it yourself and detect your blood alcohol level. You can see for yourself if your alcohol level is too high and decide not to drive. It places the responsibility of being a responsible driver back into your own hands.

This project is part of the well-known initiative that has existed for ten years now, Amigo Didi. The message of handling your life and the lives of others responsibly, using the breathalyzer, is an innovative next step. Aruba needs this.

The Supla Pa Bida campaign is a movement that unites the community, authorities, and leaders to build a safer culture for everyone, especially during the upcoming festive season.

We all have loved ones waiting for us at home. When we leave the house, we all want to return safely. Especially toward the end of the year, we see more and more accidents caused by alcohol abuse. We can—and must—prevent this.

Prevention is essential and crucial in our community. It is an honor to see that what began as an idea from a family that went through immense pain has now grown into a national awareness movement.

Onlangs heb ik gesproken met mevrouw Sue-Ann Ras om meer te vernemen over de indrukwekkende campagne van Fundacion Zinnia: Supla pa Bida, een project waarbij men een “breathalyzer”-testkit ontvangt om zelf te blazen en het alcoholgehalte in het bloed te meten. Je kunt zelf zien of je alcoholniveau te hoog is en op tijd beslissen om niet te gaan rijden. Het is een manier om de verantwoordelijkheid van verantwoord rijden terug in eigen handen te leggen.

Dit project valt onder het inmiddels tien jaar bestaande en bekende initiatief Amigo Didi. De boodschap van verantwoord omgaan met je eigen leven en dat van anderen, door middel van het gebruik van de breathalyzer, is een innovatief en vernieuwend vervolg. Aruba heeft dit hard nodig.

De campagne Supla Pa Bida is een beweging die het volk, de autoriteiten en leiders samenbrengt om een veiligere cultuur te creëren voor iedereen, vooral in de feestmaanden die voor de deur staan.

We hebben allemaal dierbaren die thuis op ons wachten. Wanneer we van huis vertrekken, willen we allemaal veilig terugkeren. Vooral richting het einde van het jaar zien we steeds meer ongelukken veroorzaakt door overmatig alcoholgebruik. Dit kunnen en moeten we voorkomen.

Preventie is essentieel en cruciaal in onze gemeenschap. Het is een eer om te zien dat wat begon als een idee van een familie die een immens verdriet heeft doorgemaakt, is uitgegroeid tot een nationale bewustwordingsbeweging.

Aruba Conservation Foundation (ACF), an independent organization dedicated to conservation management, is pleased to once again welcome the team from the Toledo Zoo to Aruba. For many decades, ACF has collaborated with specialists from Eckerd College in Florida and the Toledo Zoo in Ohio in a scientific partnership to monitor the population of the Cascabel (Crotalus unicolor) — one of the world’s most unique snakes and the only rattlesnake species found exclusively on Aruba.

During the visit in October of this year, the team led by Dr. Matt Cross, together with ACF’s Conservation Rangers, conducted surveys in six different areas on Aruba known to be Cascabel habitats. The team successfully identified new Cascabels and also relocated previously chipped individuals, providing important insight into movement patterns, behavior, and overall population status.

In December, ACF will again welcome Dr. Jeff Goessling from Eckerd College, who has assisted Aruba for decades with his expertise not only on the Cascabel but also the cododo and boa. Dr. Goessling will add new samples to the existing genetic dataset in order to assess the effective population size and examine how natural barriers or human activities may affect the Cascabel’s distribution across Aruba.

The Cascabel is an endemic species and plays an essential role in maintaining the balance of Aruba’s ecosystem. Studies show that their primary prey includes lizards, house mice, and the small ‘Aruban Cottontail’ rabbit. In this way, the Cascabel helps control populations of animals such as mice and rats, contributing to a healthy environment.

ACF emphasizes that the Cascabel is protected under the Law on the Protection of Native Flora & Fauna, and harming or killing the species is illegal. Its survival is threatened primarily by habitat loss, attacks by domestic animals such as dogs and cats, and human pressure on natural areas.

As part of the ongoing population study, researchers from ACF, Toledo Zoo, and Eckerd College are collaborating to document observations of the species. ACF calls on the community to contribute to these citizen-science efforts by reporting any sightings of Cascabels, whether in nature or more urban areas. The collected data will help determine the distribution and frequency of the endemic Cascabel and will guide the development of more effective conservation strategies.

Al tientallen jaren werkt ACF samen met specialisten van Eckerd College in Florida en de Toledo Zoo in Ohio in een wetenschappelijke samenwerking om de populatie van de Cascabel (Crotalus unicolor) te monitoren – een van de meest unieke slangen ter wereld en de enige ratelslang die uitsluitend op Aruba voorkomt.

Tijdens het bezoek in oktober van dit jaar heeft het team onder leiding van Dr. Matt Cross, samen met de Conservation Rangers van ACF, onderzoeken uitgevoerd in zes verschillende gebieden op Aruba die bekendstaan als Cascabel-habitat. Het team heeft nieuwe Cascabels geïdentificeerd en ook eerder gechipte dieren teruggevonden, wat waardevolle inzichten geeft in de bewegingen, het gedrag en de status van de populatie.

In december verwelkomt ACF opnieuw Dr. Jeff Goessling van Eckerd College, die Aruba al decennialang ondersteunt met zijn kennis en ervaring, zowel over de Cascabel als over de bekende cododo en boa. Dr. Goessling zal aanvullende genetische monsters verzamelen om zo de effectieve populatiegrootte beter te kunnen bepalen en te testen hoe natuurlijke barrières of menselijk handelen de verspreiding van de Cascabel op Aruba beïnvloeden.

De Cascabel is een endemische soort en speelt een cruciale rol in het behoud van het ecologische evenwicht. Onderzoek toont aan dat hun belangrijkste prooien hagedissen, huismuizen en het kleine konijn ‘Aruban Cottontail’ zijn. Hierdoor helpt de Cascabel bij het reguleren van populaties van onder andere muizen en ratten en draagt hij bij aan een gezonde leefomgeving.

ACF benadrukt dat de Cascabel beschermd is onder de wet Bescherming Inheemse Flora & Fauna, en dat mishandeling of het doden van de soort strafbaar is. De soort wordt vooral bedreigd door verlies van habitat, aanvallen door huisdieren zoals honden en katten, en menselijke druk op leefgebieden.

De samenwerking tussen ACF, Toledo Zoo en Eckerd College onderstreept het belang van internationale samenwerking en lokale betrokkenheid om te zorgen dat Aruba’s unieke ratelslang nog vele decennia beschermd blijft.
