During the celebration of several public holidays of great historical and cultural importance for Aruba, including Betico Croes Day, Henny Eman Day, and Watty Vos Day, the Prime Minister of Aruba and Minister of Culture, Mike Eman, was not present to deliver an official speech.

The absence of the Prime Minister during these commemorations has raised questions within the community, considering that he is a leader with deep knowledge of Aruba’s history and that his own family is directly connected to the country’s historical struggle.

At the same time, Minister Gerlien Croes—who normally would act as Vice Prime Minister of Aruba when the Prime Minister is not in Aruba—was in Aruba in this case, yet still chose to present herself as Vice Prime Minister of Aruba. She was the one who delivered the speech on Betico Croes Day, celebrated on January 25.

This caused reactions in various sectors of society, because Minister Croes is not the Minister of Culture, and her political stance of being against Status Aparte and in favor of the HOFA Kingdom Act was not appreciated regarding her presence at Betico Croes Plaza.

Critics indicate that this creates a contrast of values, considering that Betico Croes symbolizes the struggle for autonomy and national identity of Aruba, while Minister Gerlien Croes represents the opposite: wanting to end the Status Aparte struggle, supporting the HOFA Kingdom Act, and placing Aruba under the Netherlands. Is hypocrisy being played out at Liberator Betico Croes Plaza? The message shared on such a significant date should align with the historical legacy being celebrated.

Despite the controversy, many people are closely watching the speech that Minister Gerlien Croes delivered during the official celebration of Betico Croes Day on January 25, a day that holds a central place in the history and identity of the Aruban people

Op donderdag 15 januari 2026 reageerde de Aruba Marine Mammal Foundation (AMMF) op de melding van een overleden jonge vrouwelijke pantropische gevlekte dolfijn (Stenella attenuata) op het strand van Mangel Halto. Het dier werd zorgvuldig vervoerd naar een veilige locatie voor documentatie, morfometrische metingen, sectie (necropsie) en het behoud van het skelet voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek.

Volgens verklaringen van getuigen werden aanvankelijk drie dolfijnen waargenomen, waarvan één zich in ondiep water bevond en tekenen van stress vertoonde. Enkele badgasten zwommen met de dolfijn en maakten foto’s; het dier werd naar de kust gebracht nadat het was overleden, waarna AMMF werd gecontacteerd.

AMMF herinnert het publiek eraan dat de ondiepe wateren bij Malmok, Palm Beach, Eagle Beach, Surfside, Southreef, Mangel Halto en Roger’s Beach van nature kustnoodschuilplaatsen voor dolfijnen zijn. Daarom moet de gedragscode voor ontmoetingen met zeezoogdieren strikt worden nageleefd. Dolfijnen verschijnen niet in deze gebieden voor menselijk vermaak, maar om te rusten en te herstellen van een verzwakte toestand en om zich veilig te houden, weg van roofdieren zoals orka’s en haaien.

Zwemmers en watersporters wordt dringend verzocht voldoende afstand te houden van dolfijnen die beschutting zoeken. Het beste is het water te verlaten, geen contact te maken met de dieren en onmiddellijk AMMF (592-4333) te contacteren zodat getrainde hulpverleners assistentie kunnen verlenen.

Dolfijnen in een kwetsbare toestand — uitgeput, gewond, ziek, barend of zogend — worden vaak vergezeld door ondersteunende soortgenoten en zoeken regelmatig toevlucht in deze gebieden. Het verstoren van deze dolfijnen brengt zowel hun overlevingskansen als de veiligheid van mensen in gevaar.

Activiteiten zoals zwemmen in directe nabijheid kunnen een reeds verzwakte dolfijn verder uitputten. Bovendien worden natuurlijke gedragingen verstoord en wordt verhinderd dat begeleidende dolfijnen hulp kunnen bieden. Het vasthouden van een dolfijn kan voorkomen dat het dier naar de oppervlakte komt om te ademen. Daarnaast kan het proberen een verzwakte dolfijn voortijdig terug te duwen naar diep water, voordat het dier voldoende is hersteld, onbedoeld tot verdrinking leiden.

Dolfijnen (en walvissen) zijn wettelijk beschermd. Het verstoren of toebrengen van schade aan dolfijnen is verboden op grond van het Landsbesluit bescherming inheemse flora en fauna van Aruba (AB 2017.48, art. 1.b.3) en de Natuurverordening Aruba (AB 1995, nr. 2, art. 4.1, 5, 6 en 7).

AMMF roept het publiek op om samen te werken aan de bescherming van de dolfijnen die bij Aruba beschutting zoeken en van hun leefgebieden. Wij spreken onze oprechte dank uit aan alle ondersteuners en partners die betrokken zijn bij de bescherming van de zeezoogdieren van Aruba, evenals aan de personen die het incident hebben gemeld, informatie hebben verstrekt en hebben geholpen bij deze stranding van een pantropische gevlekte dolfijn, de Aruba Conservation Foundation en het Korps Politie Aruba.

On Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Aruba Marine Mammal Foundation (AMMF) responded to a deceased juvenile female Pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) at Mangel Halto Beach. The animal was carefully transported to a secure location for documentation, morphometric measurements,  necropsy, and skeleton preservation for scientific study. 

According to witness accounts, three dolphins were initially observed with one of them in the shallow area showing distress behavior.  Some bathers were swimming with the dolphin and taking pictures;  it was brought to shore when it died, at which point AMMF was contacted. 

AMMF reminds the public to be aware that the shallow waters at Malmok, Palm Beach, Eagle Beach, Surfside, Southreef, Mangel Halto, Roger’s beach, inherently are coastal emergency dolphin refuges and  therefore the marine mammal encounter code of conduct needs to be strictly adhered to.  These dolphins do not appear in these areas for human entertainment, but to rest and recover from a weakened condition, and safely away from predators (orca and sharks). Swimmers and boaters are urged to maintain a safe distance from sheltering dolphins, best is to depart from the water, refrain from touching them, and to contact AMMF (5924333) immediately for assistance by trained responders. 

Compromised dolphins individuals that are exhausted, injured, diseased, calving, or nursing—are often accompanied by supportive companions and routinely seek refuge in these areas. Disturbing these dolphins puts both their survival and your own safety at risk.

Engaging in activities like swimming in close proximity can physically exhaust an already struggling dolphin; it also prevents natural behaviors and stops companion dolphins from providing aid. Holding onto a dolphin prevents it from surfacing to breathe. Furthermore, attempting to force a compromised dolphin from shallow water back into the deep before it has recovered its strength may inadvertently cause the animal to drown.

Dolphins (and whales) are protected by law. Disturbing or causing harm to dolphins are  prohibited under the Aruba National Decree on the Protection of Indigenous Flora and Fauna (AB 2017.48, Art. 1.b.3) and the Aruba Nature Ordinance (AB 1995, No. 2, Arts. 4.1, 5, 6, 7).  

AMMF appeals to the public to unite and help protect Aruba’s sheltering dolphins and their refuges. We extend sincere gratitude to all supporters and partners involved in the protection of Aruba’s marine mammals, as well as to the individuals who reported the incident, provided information,  and assisted with this Pantropical spotted dolphin stranding, Aruba Conservation Foundation, and the Aruba Police Force.
