De bekende Arubaanse poëet Ruthy Vrieswijk heeft haar onvrede geuit over de behandeling die haar overleden moeder heeft ontvangen in het ziekenhuis op Aruba. Volgens Vrieswijk was de medische zorg die haar 89-jarige moeder kreeg nalatig, wat uiteindelijk tot haar overlijden heeft geleid.

Als burger heeft Vrieswijk een formele klacht ingediend tegen het ziekenhuis. Volgens haar werd deze klacht pas na meer dan drie maanden behandeld, tijdens een hoorzitting op donderdag 15 januari 2026. Tijdens de hoorzitting waren zes vertegenwoordigers van het ziekenhuis aanwezig, terwijl aan de kant van Vrieswijk slechts een persoon toegang kregen tot de zaal de tweede buiten moest wachten,een situatie die zij als onmenselijk bestempelde.

Vrieswijk gaf aan dat haar belangrijkste reden om haar verhaal openbaar te maken is om te voorkomen dat een dergelijke situatie zich opnieuw voordoet bij andere ouderen. “Ik wil dat onze ouderen met respect en waardigheid worden behandeld,” verklaarde zij.

Volgens Vrieswijk werd haar moeder gedurende haar gehele ziekenhuisopname verwaarloosd, vanaf het begin tot aan het moment van haar overlijden. Hij wees erop dat het na het indienen van de klacht meer dan drie maanden duurde voordat de hoorzitting plaatsvond. Hoewel zij erkende dat de behandeling tijdens de hoorzitting respectvol was, betreurde zij de verwarring, tegenstrijdige data en onduidelijke informatie, die volgens zij ernstige twijfels oproepen over de transparantie van het proces.

Een van de belangrijkste vragen betrof het ontbreken van duidelijkheid over wie de toediening van hoge doses glucose en kalmerende medicatie had goedgekeurd, ondanks het feit dat de patiente al symptomen van dementie of Alzheimer vertoonde. Volgens Vrieswijk kon niemand tijdens de hoorzitting aangeven wie verantwoordelijk was voor deze medische beslissingen.

Tijdens de hoorzitting waren de artsen D.L. aanwezig, maar arts D.T., die dienst had tijdens de ziekenhuisopname van haar moeder, was afwezig. Volgens Vrieswijk bleven hierdoor veel vragen onbeantwoord, waaronder wie verantwoordelijk was voor de dagelijkse opvolging van de patient.

Volgens Vrieswijk wijst dit op een gebrek aan teamwork en mogelijk een tekort aan medisch personeel.

Daarnaast sprak zij  ongenoegen uit over het gebruik van de term “delier” om haar te beschrijven, een typering die volgens zij onjuist was en niet getuigde van respectvol dokter

Ondanks het verdriet gaf Vrieswijk aan dankbaar te zijn dat er een hoorzitting heeft plaatsgevonden waarin zijn pijn en ervaringen kon delen. Toch benadrukte zij dat “uiteindelijk niemand heeft gewonnen: ik heb mijn moeder verloren en het publiek heeft het vertrouwen in het ziekenhuis verloren.”

Volgens Vrieswijk hebben meerdere burgers zich bij hem gemeld met vergelijkbare ervaringen over de behandeling van ouderen in het ziekenhuis, nadat haar zijn verhaal publiekelijk had gedeeld. Dit heeft volgens haar geleid tot onzekerheid binnen de gemeenschap, waarbij veel ouderen ondanks het feit dat zij AZV-premies betalen nu angst hebben om opgenomen te worden.

Vrieswijk wees ook op de rol van AZV en stelde dat budgettaire beperkingen nooit de kwaliteit van zorg voor ouderen mogen beinvloeden, zeker niet omdat deze ouderen jarenlang hebben bijgedragen. Zij benadrukte dat medische nalatigheid onder geen enkele omstandigheid of het nu gaat om personeelstekorten of burn-out te rechtvaardigen is.

“Er zijn goede artsen en er zijn slechte artsen,” verklaarde Vrieswijk, “maar er bestaat geen enkele rechtvaardiging voor het verwaarlozen van een patient.”

Zij sloot af met een krachtige oproep tot respect en waardigheid voor ouderen. “De belofte van een arts is om te helpen, te genezen en levens te redden zonder discriminatie op basis van leeftijd, ras of gezondheidstoestand,” benadrukte Vrieswijk.

Tot slot gaf Vrieswijk aan dat haar besluit om een klacht in te dienen bedoeld was om alarm te slaan en bewustwording te creëren bij zowel de gemeenschap als toekomstige medische professioneel. “Men moet het beroep van arts niet kiezen voor de titel, de witte jas of het geld, maar uit een roeping van het hart en liefde voor de medemens,” concludeerde Vrieswijk.

According to Vrieswijk, her mother was neglected throughout her stay at the hospital, from the beginning until the moment of her death. He pointed out that after the complaint was filed, it took more than three months for the hearing to take place. Although she acknowledged that the hearing itself was conducted respectfully, she lamented the presence of confusion, contradictory dates, and inconsistent information, which, according to her, raised serious doubts about the transparency of the process.

Among the questions raised was the lack of clarity regarding who authorized the administration of high doses of glucose and sedative medication to her mother, despite the fact that the patient was already showing symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer disease. According to Vrieswijk, no one present was able to answer who was responsible for these medical decisions.

During the hearing, doctors D. L. were present, but doctor D.T., who was on duty during the period when her mother was hospitalized, was absent. According to Vrieswijk, this left many questions unanswered, including who was responsible for the patient daily monitoring.

Vrieswijk criticized the hospital response when her mother sugar went down  drastically. He stated that the nursing staff appeared uncertain about how to act and repeatedly tried to contact a doctor without receiving an immediate response, because the doctor was occupied. According to Vrieswijk, this demonstrated a lack of teamwork and possibly a shortage of medical staff.

He also expressed her disapproval of the use of the term “delirium” that the docter describe Vrieswijk, a characterization that, according to Vrieswijk, was incorrect and did not reflect the conduct of a respectful docter.

Despite the pain, Vrieswijk said she was grateful that a hearing was held, allowing her to express her grief and experience. However, her emphasized that “in the end, no one won: I lost my mother, and the public lost trust in the hospital.”

According to Vrieswijk, after sharing her story publicly, several other citizens approached she with similar experiences regarding the treatment of elderly patients at the hospital. This, she said, has created insecurity within the community, where many elderly people despite paying AZV contributions now fear being hospitalized.

Vrieswijk also addressed the role of AZV, noting that budgetary limitations should not affect the quality of care provided to the elderly, especially considering that these seniors have paid contributions for many years. She stressed that under no circumstances whether due to staff shortages or burnout can medical negligence be justified.

“There are good doctors and there are bad doctors,” Vrieswijk stated, “but there is no excuse for neglecting a patient.”

She concluded with a strong call for respect and dignity for the elderly. “A doctor’s promise is to help, heal, and save lives without discrimination based on age, race, or condition,” she emphasized.

Finally, Vrieswijk explained that her decision to file a complaint was meant to sound the alarm and raise awareness among both the community and future medical professionals. “One should not choose the medical profession for the title, the white coat, or the money, but for a calling of the heart and love for one’s fellow human beings,” she concluded.

De viering van Beticodag komt eraan. Op 25 januari wordt de geboortedag van bevrijder Gilberto “Betico” Croes herdacht, een nationale dag waarop het Arubaanse volk zijn historische nalatenschap eert en herdenkt. Zoals elk jaar organiseert de Nationale Bibliotheek een speciale activiteit, en ook dit jaar vormt daarop geen uitzondering.

De Nationale Bibliotheek zal Beticodag vieren op 22 januari met een uitgebreid cultureel programma dat is gewijd aan het leven en werk van Betico Croes. De viering zal de Bevrijder eren met diverse culturele en artistieke activiteiten.

Glenda Zavala, coördinator van het evenement, liet weten dat een van de centrale momenten van de avond de deelname zal zijn van Guisette Croes, dochter van Betico Croes, die een persoonlijk verhaal zal delen over de biografie en nalatenschap van haar vader.

Het programma zal ook poëzievoordrachten bevatten van verschillende Dichters van het Vaderland, waaronder Rutty Vrieswijk, Ariana Chirino, Avi Goeloe en Berta Wolf, die zullen bijdragen aan de plechtige en culturele sfeer van de avond.

Ter afsluiting van de viering kan het publiek genieten van een muzikale presentatie van Grupo Betico, een groep die vele jaren geleden door Betico Croes zelf werd opgericht. Generaties van broers, neven en nichten hebben de groep door de jaren heen voortgezet en houden zo de muzikale geest en culturele nalatenschap levend.

De activiteit vindt plaats op 22 januari en begint om 19.00 uur in de Nationale Bibliotheek. De Nationale Bibliotheek nodigt de gehele Arubaanse gemeenschap uit om deel te nemen aan deze bijzondere viering en een nalatenschap te eren die “wij nooit mogen vergeten.”
